Do All New Companies Need GST Registration?
No, GST registration is not automatically mandatory for all newly registered companies. However, understanding when it becomes mandatory is crucial for compliance and avoiding penalties.
GST Registration is Mandatory If:
- Annual turnover exceeds Rs 40 lakh (Rs 20 lakh for service providers, Rs 10 lakh for special category states)
- Inter-state supply of goods or services (even if below threshold)
- E-commerce operators or sellers through e-commerce platforms
- Casual taxable persons making temporary supplies in a different state
- Input service distributors receiving invoices for services used by branches
- Voluntary registration - you can register even below the threshold
Why Register Even If Not Mandatory?
- •Input Tax Credit (ITC): Claim GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales
- •Business Credibility: B2B clients prefer GST-registered vendors
- •Interstate Operations: Mandatory for selling across state borders
- •E-commerce: Required for selling on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, etc.
- •Government Tenders: Most tenders require GST registration

- •Tax Rate: 1% for manufacturers, 5% for restaurants, 6% for service providers
